Asset Tag Generator
Asset tags identify and track your equipment. Enter a prefix (e.g. ASSET-, IT-, EQ-), set the starting number, and add descriptions for each item. The generator creates a numbered series of tags with a barcode or QR code, ready to print on label sheets.
How to use this tool
- 1Enter your organisation name, the tag prefix (e.g. ASSET-), and the starting number.
- 2Set the number of tags and the zero-padding (e.g. 001 for 3 digits).
- 3Optionally add a description, location, or department for each tag.
- 4Choose the tag format: barcode (Code 128) or QR code.
- 5Click 'Generate Tags' to preview the label sheet and 'Print / Download' to save or print.
Example
Organisation: TechCorp. Prefix: IT-LAP-. Start: 001. Count: 25. Zero padding: 3 digits (IT-LAP-001 to IT-LAP-025). Format: Code 128 barcode. Description field: user name. Printed on Avery 5160 label sheet, applied to each laptop lid.
Organisation: Greenfield Primary. Prefix: GF-. Start: 0100. Count: 50 tags (GF-0100 to GF-0149). Format: QR code linking to asset register entry. Printed on label sheet, applied to classroom equipment.
Common use cases
- IT departments tagging laptops, monitors, and peripherals for inventory tracking
- Schools and universities labelling classroom equipment with serial-numbered asset tags
- Offices tagging furniture and equipment for insurance records and audits
- Rental businesses tagging hire equipment for tracking and returns
- Warehouses creating asset tags for tools and equipment in tool cribs
Common mistakes
- Using a prefix that is too long - keep the prefix short so the full tag ID (prefix + number) fits readably on a small label.
- Not keeping a record of which tag corresponds to which asset - the tag is only useful if you maintain a register of tag ID to asset.
