ID Copy Watermark Tool - Protect Your ID Documents

Sharing an unprotected copy of your ID or passport online is a fraud risk. Landlords, banks, employers, and online services frequently ask for ID verification - but a clean, unmarked copy can be misused. This tool adds a clear, diagonal watermark across the entire document in one click, using preset templates designed for ID protection. Optionally drag to blur or pixelate sensitive areas like your full ID number before sharing. Runs entirely in your browser - your image never leaves your device.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Upload a photo or scan of your ID, passport, or other document. JPG, PNG, and WebP are supported.
  2. 2Choose a watermark preset: 'Copy Only' adds a standard fraud warning; 'Submitted To' adds a recipient name and date; 'Custom text' lets you type your own message.
  3. 3For the 'Submitted To' preset, enter the name of the organisation you are sharing the copy with and the date.
  4. 4Optionally enable 'Blur sensitive area', then drag on the image to pixelate your full ID number or date of birth.
  5. 5The live preview updates as you type. When satisfied, click 'Download PNG' for a high-quality image or 'Download PDF' for an email-ready document.

Example

Rental application - sharing with a letting agent

Upload passport photo page. Select 'Submitted To' preset. Enter 'Acme Property Ltd' as recipient and today's date. Enable blur, drag over the passport number. Download PDF. The copy is clearly watermarked 'SUBMITTED TO: ACME PROPERTY LTD | 08/06/2026' diagonally across the page, with the passport number pixelated.

KYC verification - sharing with an online service

Upload driving licence photo. Select 'Copy Only' preset. No blur needed. Download PNG. The image reads 'COPY ONLY - NOT FOR FRAUDULENT USE' in red diagonal text across the full document. Safe to share via the service's upload form.

Common use cases

  • Tenants sharing a passport or driving licence copy with a landlord or letting agent for a rental application
  • Job applicants providing an ID copy during remote hiring or background check processes
  • Freelancers sharing ID for KYC verification with banks, payment platforms, or crypto exchanges
  • Anyone submitting proof of identity to an online marketplace, rental car service, or delivery platform
  • Parents sharing a child's passport copy with schools, clubs, or travel organisers

Common mistakes

  • Sending a clean, unprotected copy of your ID - without a watermark, a recipient can use your document for any purpose. Always watermark before sharing.
  • Using a generic text watermark instead of including the recipient's name - a watermark that says 'COPY ONLY' without identifying the recipient still allows the document to be passed on. Use the 'Submitted To' preset to tie the copy to a specific organisation.
  • Blurring your photo instead of your ID number - the photo is what verifies your identity; the ID number is what fraudsters exploit. Blur the number, not the face.
  • Downloading a low-resolution version - if you resize the image before uploading, the watermark and blur quality match the upload resolution. Upload the highest-quality scan you have.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server, stored, or transmitted. Nothing leaves your device.

Why should I watermark my ID?

A watermarked ID copy is harder to misuse for identity fraud. If the watermark clearly states the recipient and date, it cannot plausibly be passed off as a blank copy for use elsewhere. The 'Submitted To' preset is specifically designed for this purpose.

Does this work on a mobile phone?

Yes. The tool runs in any modern mobile browser. The drag-to-blur feature is designed for mouse input - on mobile, use the toggle to enable blur mode and then tap-drag on the image. For best results on mobile, use PNG format.

Can I watermark a two-page passport spread (photo + data pages)?

This tool processes one image at a time. If you have a two-page scan, split it into separate images and process each one individually, or use the Submitted To preset consistently so both pages are clearly linked to the same recipient.

Will the watermark be removed by image editing software?

A determined fraudster with image editing software can attempt to remove any watermark. The goal of this tool is deterrence and traceability, not absolute protection. For higher-stakes sharing, use the 'Submitted To' preset with the specific recipient's name and today's date, which makes misuse clearly evidenced.

What does the blur do exactly?

The blur applies a pixelation effect to the area you drag over. It replaces the pixels in that region with large blocks, making text unreadable while preserving the visual structure of the document (showing that something is there, but making it illegible). It is not reversible from the downloaded image.
