Notes

A packing slip goes inside the package. It lists what was shipped and matches the buyer's order so they can confirm the contents without opening an invoice. Fill in the order details and the items, and print a clean slip to include with every shipment.

Common use cases

  • E-commerce sellers including a packing slip in every parcel so customers can verify the contents
  • Wholesale suppliers sending multiple lines to a retail buyer with a delivery note for goods received
  • Handmade goods sellers including a personalised packing slip with a thank-you note
  • Businesses fulfilling purchase orders and including a reference document with the shipment
  • Anyone who wants a professional document inside a package without showing prices

Common mistakes

  • Including prices on a packing slip - packing slips intentionally omit prices so gifts and third-party shipments do not reveal the purchase price.
  • Using the packing slip instead of an invoice - the invoice is the billing document; the packing slip is purely for shipment verification.
  • Not matching the order number - always reference the original order or PO number so the customer can reconcile the delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?

A packing slip lists what is in the package without prices. It is a physical document for the customer to verify the shipment contents. An invoice is a billing document requesting payment and typically includes prices, totals, and payment terms. For B2B shipments, both documents are usually sent together.

Should a packing slip show prices?

Generally no. Packing slips are used for shipment verification and often go to a goods-receiving team or are included in gift shipments where showing the price would be inappropriate. Send the invoice separately by email.

Is a packing slip the same as a delivery note?

They serve the same purpose. 'Packing slip' is the common term in North America and e-commerce; 'delivery note' is more common in the UK and B2B contexts. Both list items and quantities in a shipment without prices.
