PDF Restriction Remover
What this tool does and does not do
- Removes print, copy, and edit restrictions from PDFs that open without a password
- Cannot remove open passwords (PDFs that require a password just to view)
- Cannot crack or brute-force any password
Only use this on documents you own or have legal permission to modify.

PDF files only
Remove print, copy, and edit restrictions from PDFs that you can already open but cannot print or modify. Upload the PDF, click Remove restrictions, and download a clean copy with all permission locks removed. Processing runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib - your file is never uploaded to a server. This tool removes restrictions only; it cannot open PDFs that require a password to view.
How to use this tool
- 1Upload your PDF using the file area. The tool immediately checks whether the PDF opens without a password or requires one.
- 2If the PDF opens without a password (the most common case for work and corporate documents), you will see a confirmation that restrictions can be removed. Most PDFs that block printing or copying fall into this category.
- 3Click Remove restrictions. The tool re-saves the PDF without the encryption layer that enforces the permission locks.
- 4Download the unlocked PDF. You can now print, copy text, and edit the document normally in any PDF viewer or editor.
Example
A purchasing manager receives a PDF price list from a supplier that opens fine but blocks printing. Upload the PDF - the tool confirms it opens without a password. Click Remove restrictions. Download the unlocked copy and print it for the team meeting. The text, tables, and formatting are identical to the original.
A researcher has a PDF market report that displays in Adobe Reader but greys out the copy text option. Upload the PDF, click Remove restrictions, and download the clean version. They can now copy quotations and figures directly into their write-up instead of retyping them.
Common use cases
- Printing PDF invoices, price lists, or reports sent by suppliers or partners with print restrictions applied
- Copying text from locked research reports, whitepapers, or government documents for use in summaries or presentations
- Editing a locked PDF template or form in Adobe Acrobat after receiving it from a client or colleague
- Removing legacy permission restrictions from archived company documents before converting or reformatting them
- Enabling accessibility tools (screen readers, text-to-speech) on restricted PDFs that block content extraction
Common mistakes
- Uploading a PDF that requires a password to open - this tool only removes restrictions from PDFs you can already view without a password; open-password PDFs cannot be processed here
- Expecting this to work on scanned image PDFs with no text layer - the tool removes permission flags but cannot add a text layer to a scanned-image-only PDF
- Using this on documents you do not own or have no right to modify - removing restrictions without authorisation may breach copyright or access control laws; always check before unlocking
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a PDF password and a PDF restriction?
A PDF can have two types of security. An open password (user password) is needed just to view the file - you cannot open it at all without typing the password. A restriction password (owner password) is used to lock specific actions like printing, copying, or editing. The PDF still opens and displays normally, but your PDF viewer blocks certain actions. This tool removes the second type only.
Can this tool remove a password I need to type just to open a PDF?
No. This tool only removes permission restrictions from PDFs that already open without requiring any password. PDFs that ask you for a password when you try to open them cannot be processed here. To create an unrestricted copy of such a file, you need to open it in a viewer using the correct password, then use File > Print to PDF.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. All processing runs in your browser using the pdf-lib library. Your file never leaves your device and is never sent to any server. This makes it safe to process confidential business documents, financial reports, and proprietary files.
Does removing restrictions change the content of the PDF?
No. The tool re-saves the document structure without the encryption layer that enforces the permission flags. Text, images, formatting, links, and all other content remain identical to the original.
Will this work on all PDFs with print restrictions?
It works on PDFs secured using standard PDF encryption (RC4 or AES) with an empty user password - which covers the vast majority of work and corporate PDFs with print or copy restrictions. It will not work on PDFs that use non-standard security handlers or that require a non-empty user password to open.
Is it legal to remove PDF restrictions?
Legality depends on your jurisdiction and the specific document. In general, removing restrictions from a document you own or have received permission to modify is acceptable. Circumventing restrictions on copyrighted content, DRM-protected publications, or documents shared under licence terms that prohibit modification may violate copyright law or terms of service. Always check before unlocking documents you did not create.
Why can I open the PDF but not print it?
Many PDFs are created with a restriction password that leaves the open password empty (so anyone can view it) but locks specific actions like printing, copying text, or editing. PDF viewers like Adobe Reader enforce these restrictions but the content is still readable. This tool removes those permission flags so all actions are allowed.
