Amazon Product Image Requirements: What You Need to Know in 2026
Amazon enforces strict rules on product images - and listings with non-compliant images get suppressed from search results until the images are fixed. Understanding the requirements before you create your images saves time, protects your listing, and ensures the zoom feature works properly - which has a direct impact on conversion rate.
Main image rules (non-negotiable)
The main image is the first image customers see in search results and at the top of your product page. Amazon enforces these requirements strictly:
- Pure white background: the background must be RGB 255, 255, 255. Off-white, light grey, or cream will fail the automated check and can result in listing suppression.
- Product must fill at least 85% of the image frame: a product floating in a sea of white with lots of negative space will be flagged.
- No text, graphics, or inset images: the main image must show only the product. No badges, watermarks, promotional text, or lifestyle props.
- No mannequins for clothing: apparel must be photographed flat-lay or on a model, not on an invisible mannequin.
- Minimum 1,000 pixels on the longest side: below this threshold, the zoom feature is disabled, which reduces conversion rates.
Why 2,000 x 2,000px is the recommended size
While 1,000px enables zoom, Amazon recommends 2,000 x 2,000px for main images and most sellers use this as their standard. Larger images allow customers to zoom in further, revealing product details and texture that build purchase confidence. On high-DPI (Retina) screens, 2,000px images also appear sharper than 1,000px images at standard display size. The difference in zoom quality between 1,000px and 2,000px is visible and meaningful for products where detail matters - jewellery, electronics, fabric, food packaging.
Additional image rules
Amazon allows up to 9 images per listing (1 main + 8 additional). Additional images have more flexibility:
- Lifestyle images are allowed: show the product in use, in context, or being worn.
- Infographics and text overlays are permitted on additional images: use these to highlight key features, dimensions, or ingredients.
- Multiple angles: show the product from front, back, side, and top where relevant.
- Scale reference images: showing the product next to a common object (a hand, a coin) helps customers understand size.
- Video: Amazon allows a product video in the additional media slot - this significantly increases conversion for complex products.
Accepted file formats
Amazon accepts JPEG (recommended), PNG, TIFF, and GIF formats. JPEG is preferred because it produces smaller file sizes at high quality, making uploads faster and within the file size limit. PNG is useful when you need a transparent background for secondary images, though the main image must have a white background. Avoid GIF for static product images - it supports only 256 colours and produces poor quality for photographs.
File size limits
Amazon imposes a maximum file size of 10MB per image. A 2,000 x 2,000px JPEG at high quality typically comes in around 1-3MB, well within the limit. However, if you are working with RAW or TIFF source files exported at maximum quality, the file size can exceed 10MB. Compress images above 5MB before uploading. The Image Compressor on this site can reduce file size significantly without visible quality loss.
What gets your listing suppressed
- Non-white main image background: the most common cause of suppression. Even a slight off-white will fail.
- Image below the minimum resolution: listings without a compliant image above 1,000px are hidden from search.
- Watermarks or text on the main image: any overlay on the main image violates policy.
- Showing accessories or items not included in the listing: only include what the customer receives.
- Using stock photography that shows multiple colour variants: the image must match the specific variant (ASIN) it is listed under.
