Lossy vs lossless: the core difference

MP3: small and universal

WAV: uncompressed and raw
WAV stores audio completely uncompressed. It is the standard working format for editors and DAWs because there is no compression to degrade the sound when you edit and re-save repeatedly. The downside is size: WAV is huge, often 8 to 12 times larger than an MP3 of the same audio, because it stores every sample in full. Use WAV while editing, then export to MP3 or FLAC when you are done.
FLAC: lossless but compressed
FLAC gives you the best of both: it is lossless like WAV, so it sounds identical to the source, but it compresses the data to about 40 to 70 percent of the WAV size. Decoding a FLAC returns exactly the original samples. Use FLAC to archive masters or build a high-quality music library where you care about perfect quality but want to save space. The catch is compatibility: not every phone, car, or app plays FLAC.
